Summary:
The paper reviews agricultural problems associated with Brazil´s effort to colonize a 3000 km pioneer rain forest highway. Attention is focused on cash crops since a major objective of the government settlement scheme was provide opportunities for landless peasants to become entrepreneurial farmers.
